The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has posted the FY 2026 ICD-10-CM Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting, which contain rules to accompany the coding instructions in the ICD-10-CM manual. The updated guidelines accompany the FY 2026 ICD-10-CM manual posted in June. The FY 2026 ICD-10-CM update adds 487 new diagnosis codes, revises 38 codes, and removes 28 codes. Updates to the guidelines include clarifications for coding HIV, coding for conditions involving multiple sites, and Type 2 diabetes in remission.
The 2026 ICD-10-CM guidelines and changes to codes are to be used for resident stays occurring from October 1, 2025, through September 30, 2026. All files for the FY 2026 updates are available to download on the CDC website.
As a reminder, it is essential for coders in nursing homes to have the current ICD-10 Manual and Coding Guidelines to ensure accurate codes for billing and reporting.
