Washington, D.C. – The American Health Care Association and the National Center for Assisted Living (AHCA/NCAL) will present Quality Awards to 341 long term care facilities that demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to quality care for the nations’ frail, elderly and disabled.
“Recipients of our Quality Award reflect the long term care profession’s commitment to meeting customers’ needs through a process of continuous quality improvement. Increasingly, through programs such as Advancing Excellence in America’s Nursing Homes campaign, providers recognize how this translates into enhanced quality of care and quality of life for their residents,” said AHCA/NCAL President and CEO Bruce Yarwood. “Recipients of this prestigious award know that the pursuit of excellence is a continuous journey, and that the satisfaction of residents, families and staff makes the journey worthwhile.”
The Awards in 2008 consist of an entry level, Step I Award, a more rigorous Step II Award, and a final Step III Award that mirrors the Baldrige National Quality Award criteria. This year 315 facilities will be recognized with the Step I Award, 23 facilities will receive the Step II Award, and 3 facilities will be recognized for reaching the highest level of performance excellence, Step III. A total of 647 applications were received from four categories of long term care providers in 47 states
Bernie Dana, Chair of The Quality Award Board of Overseers, commended the program, stating, “The highly recognized AHCA/NCAL Quality continues to be a successful, independently judged, criteria-based, award program.” The Quality Award Board of Overseers strengthened the program by developing 11 success factors that serve as a valuable framework and tool for facilities that are initiating a systems-based perspective to achieve sustainable levels of performance excellence.
The AHCA/NCAL Quality Award is informed by criteria from the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, which is the nation’s premier recognition for quality achievement. AHCA/NCAL’s award recognizes the commitment to a continuous quality improvement process at nursing facilities, assisted living residences, and residences for persons with mental retardation or developmental disabilities. Recipient facilities have made quality outcomes and customer satisfaction top priorities.
The Quality Award was created in 1996 and is part of AHCA/NCAL’s extensive quality program. Step I awardees developed solid vision and mission statements, and an awareness of their environment and customers’ expectations. Recipients at the Step II level addressed their approaches to the core values and concepts of visionary leadership, focus on the future, resident-focused excellence, management by fact, organizational and personal learning, valuing staff and partners, systems perspective and innovation, and focus on results and creating value.
The Step III category addressed the Baldrige National Quality Award criteria in its entirety, specifically their achievement of superior results through their approaches and integration of the seven major categories of leadership; strategic planning, focus on customers, measurement, analysis and knowledge management, workforce focus, process management and results
The Quality Awards are made possible through the work of dedicated examiners who work individually and collectively to review each application, select award recipients, and provide individualized feedback reports to all applicants. This year, 100 individuals, who are healthcare providers or staff of Quality Improvement Organizations, volunteered their time for this effort. The Quality Award recipients will be honored for their achievement and presented with their award during AHCA/NCAL’s 59th Annual Convention and Exposition, October 5-8, 2008 in Nashville, TN.
The awards are sponsored by McKesson Medical-Surgical, a leading distributor of medical supplies and equipment to physician practices, surgery centers, hospitals, home care, and extended care facilities, and they are a valued AHCA/NCAL Associate Business Member and My InnerView, a Web-based applied research and quality-management company that supports leaders across the entire assisted living, senior housing and skilled nursing profession with tools to measure, benchmark and improve performance.
