FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

6/3/2019
Washington, D.C. –The American Health Care Association and National Center for Assisted Living (AHCA/NCAL) today recognized the 2019 Joe Warner Patient Advocacy Award recipients at its annual Congressional Briefing event. Two advocates for the long term and post-acute care profession were recognized for their commitment to care for seniors and individuals with disabilities:
  • Leonard (Len) Russ, Principal Partner, Bayberry Health Care
  • Nanci Wilson, Chief Clinical Officer and Legislative Liaison, Plum Healthcare Group
AHCA/NCAL gives this award to association members who have worked directly to educate members of Congress about the needs of long term and post-acute care patients and to advance quality care. The award recognizes long term care professionals who possess the same compassion for – and commitment to – the country’s elderly and individuals with disabilities that exemplified the work of former president and CEO of Illinois-based Heritage Enterprises, Joe Warner.

“Len and Nanci are tremendous role models,” said AHCA/NCAL President and CEO Mark Parkinson. “Their passion and efforts to advance the long term care profession have been the driving force behind their success. Their hearts are full of grace and dedication, and it is an honor to recognize them with this award today.”

This year’s award recipients truly represent the best of the long term and post-acute care profession.
  • Leonard Russ is the principal partner of Bayberry Health Care, a New York based partnership specializing in skilled nursing, sub-acute, and in-patient short-term rehabilitative care. Russ has delivered expert testimony before committees of the U.S. Congress and the New York State Legislature. Prior to his career in health care, he spent several years as a journalist at a variety of major media organizations including the Associated Press, CBS News and ABC News, and served as an editorial consultant to CNN. Under Russ’s stewardship, his skilled nursing and rehabilitation facilities have been widely recognized for excellence and quality resident-centered care, including repeated “five-star” ratings by CMS and rankings among the Best Nursing Homes in America by U.S. News & World Report.
  • Nanci Wilson is the Chief Clinical Officer and Legislative Liaison at Plum Healthcare Group and has been with the organization for over 12 years. Her 42-year career of operational and administrative experience within the geriatric health care industry includes working in skilled nursing facilities, home health, and acute rehab. She has collaborated with AHCA/NCAL numerous times, including serving on the Reimbursement Cabinet, as a representative for Non-Therapy Ancillary Services Technical Expert Panel, and as a faculty member of the Patient-Driven Payment Model Academy. Additionally, Wilson has partnered with California Association of Healthcare Facilities’ Governmental Relations, Work Group on Palliative Care, Work Group on Patient Centered Care Coordination, and Multi-facility Task Force group. Wilson is also certified as a clinical instructor and home health administrator, and previously was a residential care facility for the elderly administrator.
