Surveyors look to see that staff are trained and competent in delivering quality person-centered dementia care. CARES® consists of eight programs including dementia care, serious mental illness, elder abuse, and a Spanish language version of CARES® Dementia Basics. View a free five-minute preview of each program here.
For a more in-depth look at the CARES®, view Module 1 (Meet Clara Jones – An introduction to Person-Centered Care) at no cost for AHCA/NCAL members. This free online training module is a great way to introduce new staff to person-centered dementia care in staff meetings or staff trainings. CARES® is easy to use, can be accessed from any computer, tablet, or mobile device, and can be started and stopped as often as users wish.
CARES®
Dementia Basics™ module is recognized by the Alzheimer’s Association® for successfully incorporating the evidence-based Dementia Care Practice Recommendations in the following topic areas: Alzheimer’s and dementia, person-centered care, assessment and care planning, activities of daily living, and behaviors and communication.
CARES® training is unique because it includes actual direct-care video “before and after” training with an easy-to-use, easy-to-remember approach to dementia care called the CARES® Approach (C-Connect, A-Assess Behavior, R-Respond, E-Evaluate, and S-Share). The CARES® Approach can be used in any situation, with any person with dementia, and at any stage of the disease.
After staff complete CARES® Dementia Basics, consider additional CARES online programs including:
Each CARES® program includes CARES® Dementia Certification at no additional cost. As an organization, HCI then allows you to advertise CARES® Dementia Certification to your community and families.
CARES® is the only dementia care training to make extensive use of actual footage of real residents and real staff members (no actors) for truly authentic virtual training environment. Staff members will learn person-centered techniques to address issues, which often leads to behavior such as biting, kicking, punching, screaming, public urination and sexual behaviors.
