Honors dedication and commitment of providers of skilled nursing services
SACRAMENTO – California Gov. Gavin Newsom has declared May 12, 2021 as California Skilled Nursing Recognition Day to honor the remarkable dedication and sacrifice of workers in skilled nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Governor’s announcement recognizes the difficult circumstances faced by skilled nursing providers who worked to limit the spread of the deadly virus in the face of challenging circumstances, including an initial lack of personal protective equipment and testing availability.
The Governor praised the heroic efforts of workers who provided support to residents when families were unable to visit and acknowledged ongoing efforts to maintain access to quality care, while ensuring access to vaccinations and regular testing.
“This is a great acknowledgement of the tireless work provided by skilled nursing caregivers who risked their own lives to take care of vulnerable residents,” said Craig Cornett, CEO/President of the California Association of Health Facilities. “It’s especially noteworthy that Gov. Newsom recognized that the efforts of California skilled nursing staff resulted in the lowest fatality ratio among nursing homes in the continental United States,” he added.
Gov. Newsom’s day of recognition coincides with National Skilled Nursing Care Week, which recognizes the essential role of skilled nursing centers in caring for the nation’s frail, elderly and disabled. The event is celebrated annually beginning on Mother’s Day and runs this year from May 9-15.
