Agency Staffing Use Declines as Long Term Care Rebuilds Its Workforce

Workforce; Long Term Care

Long term care providers are making progress rebuilding their workforce and reducing reliance on agency staffing. According to Staffing Industry Analysts’ (SIA’s) US Healthcare Staffing Market Growth Assessment: 2026, nursing facilities added 40,700 jobs in 2025, while agency staffing use fell approximately 44% from fourth-quarter 2022 levels. 90% of health systems are still reporting recruiting difficulty, the research also noted. More details are available in SIA’s US Healthcare Staffing Market Growth Assessment 2026.

Last year, AHCA/NCAL launched its Caregivers for Tomorrow initiative, which is a nationwide effort to drive policy change to strengthen and expand the long term care workforce through innovative, sustainable solutions. These solutions will attract new caregivers, support current staff, and ensure every older adult and individual with disabilities has access to the high-quality care they deserve for years to come.
