Federal Government Using NHSN Data to Direct Supplies

COVID-19; Research and Data

Accurate reporting to National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) is crucial. On October 2, 2020, the Whitehouse hosted a provider call. During the call, Administrator Seema Verma identified that the information being submitted to the NHSN has been extremely helpful in identifying the areas hardest hit by supply shortages. Through the NHSN reporting module for supplies, the Federal Government can deploy tangible onsite resources to assist centers.

During the call, it was announced that they are using the NHSN data that is being reported to respond to nursing home personal protective equipment (PPE) needs. The NHSN data allows them to directly target any facility saying that they are challenged with PPE supplies. They reported that utilizing the NHSN reported data, they were able to facilitate support to more than 1,000 long term care facilities and directly shipped N-95 masks in August. This emphasizes the importance of actively reporting to NHSN as they are using this data to facilitate supply designations to facilities.
