Person Centered Care is Key to Memory Care Success

Programs and Resources; Assisted Living

Assisted living transformed memory care in the U.S. for the better. However, memory care is challenging, and a  2023 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Directors Association found significant state-to-state variations in the use of off-label use of antipsychotics in assisted living settings.

Key to reducing off-label antipsychotic use is having staff specifically trained in person-centered dementia care, so that they know how to identify individual triggers, mitigate causes of behaviors and intervene with non-pharmacological approaches that support each resident’s quality of life.

CARES® Dementia Basics™ module is recognized by the Alzheimer’s Association® for successfully incorporating the evidence-based Dementia Care Practice Recommendations in the following topic areas: Alzheimer’s and dementia, person-centered care, assessment and care planning, activities of daily living, and behaviors and communication. The training is also available in Spanish.

After completing CARES® Dementia Basics, staff can take additional CARES online programs including:

CARES® Serious Mental Illness™  may be taken as a freestanding course without taking the Dementia Basics course first.
