U.S. Supply of LPNs to be Short by 30% by 2038

The U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) workforce projection data from December 18, 2025, shows the U.S. will have 565,690 LPNs by 2038 but will need 811,640, equaling a shortage of 245,950.  

The National Center for Health Workforce Analysis provides projections of the future supply of and demand for healthcare occupations. Projections were generated using some data from the period of the pandemic. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, about 4 in 10 LPNs and licensed vocational nurses work in skilled nursing facilities and residential care facilities.
